Why I’m leaving social media (and where you can find me instead)

After years of spending time on social media, I’ve decided it’s time to step away for the forseeable future.

I already take a month-long break from the online world in December every year, but it’s not enough. Social media has become a place that drains energy, time and resources, for very little return. Or at least on my part.

I’m open to the idea that perhaps I’ve shifted as well. There was a time where I’d happily spend hours on the apps, but these days it feels like a waste of my time. It feels like while I’m on there, I have to lean into my marketing skills more and more, and honestly all I want to do is write.

So, I’ve decided that after my December Detox finishes, I won’t be making a big return to social media. Instead, I’ll be spending more time writing fabulous projects, one of which is a brand new book and the other is a Substack page.

I’ve realised I spend more time trying to appeal to an audience, rather than connect with a community. If I want meaningful conversations and genuine connections, it doesn’t feel like social media is the place to get that anymore. I’m not sure if it ever was, or it it was but it’s just changed beyond recognition.

Anyway, I’m writing this to tell you that I’m moving on from social media.

I’ll be writing more over at The Free Woman, and working on a book of the same name.
